Combined Report on Dialysis and Transplantation in Korea, 1991

Abstract
The characteristics of the patient population undergoing renal replacement therapy (RRT) in Korea in 1991 are presented. The living patients undergoing RRT were 8628 (198.3 per million population). Of these, 4680 patients (111.7 per million
population)
were living on hemodialysis, 1392 patients (32.0 per million population) on CAPD and 2376 patients (54.6 per million population) on functioning renal grafts. The New patients starting RRT were 3813 (87.6 per million population) (HD 2524, CAPD 617
and
Transplantation 672). The primary renal diseases of new hemodialysis patients were glomerulonephritis (27.6%), diabetic nephropathy (13.2%), hypertensive nephrosclerosis (9.6%) in order. In hemodialysis patents, male to female ratio was 6 to 4
and
the
proportion of old patients, whose ages were over 50, was 42%. In hemodialysis patients, the annual death rate was 8.7% and the causes of death were cardiac (36.4%). Vascular (16.4%), infection(11.0%), social (10.5%) in order. In patients
reciveing
RRT.
The proporktion of transplant recipients has increased from 18% in 1987 to 28% in 1991.
